Ilhan Omar: ‘Send her back’ chant reminded me of ‘the horrors of civil war in Somalia’

Rep. Ilhan Omar said she was reminded of times when “fearmongering was allowed to flourish” and the Somalia civil war when she heard the “send her back” chant that broke out during President Trump’s North Carolina rally.

“Last week, as President Trump watched the crowd at one of his rallies chant ‘Send her back,’ aimed at me and my family, I was reminded of times when such fearmongering was allowed to flourish,” the Minnesota Democrat wrote in a New York Times op-ed. “I also couldn’t help but remember the horrors of civil war in Somalia that my family and I escaped, the America we expected to find and the one we actually experienced.”

“The president’s rally will be a defining moment in American history,” the freshman congresswoman continued. “It reminds us of the grave stakes of the coming presidential election: that this fight is not merely about policy ideas; it is a fight for the soul of our nation.”

Omar’s op-ed comes a week after Trump held a rally during which the crowd reacted to his criticism of the congresswoman by chanting, “Send her back!”

The chants followed Trump’s tweets three days earlier telling Omar and her fellow progressive congresswomen to “go back” to their home countries if they are unhappy with the United States.
