A Silver Spring man accused of barging into the U.S. Capitol with a loaded handgun last month has been indicted on several new charges, including possession of cocaine and causing more than $200,000 in damages.
Carlos Greene, 20, has been held on one federal firearms charge since Sept. 18, when authorities said Greene eluded police in his car before crashing it on Capitol grounds and entering the U.S. Capitol. Green, who was carrying a .22 caliber handgun, was able to bypass at least three officers as he slipped through an unguarded door into the Rotunda and ran down four-stories before he was tackled by civilians.
The security breach has been an embarrassment for the Capitol Police department. Acting Chief Christopher McGaffin apologized to lawmakers and ordered an independent investigation. Capitol Police said that an officer should have been manning the entrance through which Greene entered.
On Tuesday, a federal grand jury added seven new charges against Greene, including fleeing law enforcement, destruction of government property, assaulting a police officer, possession of a firearm while convicted of a crime exceeding one year, possession with intent to distribute 5 grams or more of cocaine and possession of a firearm during a drug trafficking offense.
Authorities said Greene caused more than $200,000 in damages when he rammed his car into a Capitol grounds fence and stone wall.
