White House: Defending Ukraine against Putin is ‘standing up for American values’

Americans will benefit from President Joe Biden rallying the world against the efforts of Russian President Vladimir Putin to invade his southwestern neighbor, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Tuesday.

The tense situation has been unfolding for months but has escalated in the last few days as Russia unilaterally recognized two separatist regions in eastern Ukraine in a move widely seen as paving the way for a larger invasion.

“Hopefully the American people who are tuning into this, or have been tuning into this, will see that the president of the United States and his entire national security apparatus have been rallying the world in standing up against the efforts of Russia to invade and carve out a chunk of another country for their own,” Psaki said Tuesday. “The world is standing with the United States against the actions of President Putin.”

The statement came in response to a reporter’s question about what the country should expect going forward as the situation unfolds. The United States has promised intense sanctions against Russia, some of which are now being implemented, but has not committed to sending troops to defend Ukraine.

“We stand up against that type of action,” Psaki added. “That goes back to World War II, and we have repeatedly, throughout history, been leaders in the world in rallying support for any efforts to seize territory from another country.”

But the effort will not come without costs, Psaki warned, which could include rising energy costs, as Russia is a large oil exporter. She also said all efforts will be made to reduce the impact on the public.

“This is about standing up for American values,” Psaki said. “[Biden] wanted to make clear to Americans what impact that could have.”
