Biden says 100M relief checks distributed by Wednesday

The Biden administration will have sent 100 million checks to families by Wednesday, President Biden said as he touted the benefits of his $1.9 trillion spending package during a visit to Columbus, Ohio.

On the 11th anniversary of the Affordable Care Act becoming law, he said his package builds on the promise of Obamacare and described how his vast spending plan would reduce the cost of insurance premiums.

“We have a duty not just to protect it but to make it better and keep becoming a nation where healthcare is a right for all, not a privilege for a few,” he said at the James Cancer Hospital. “Millions of families will be able to sleep a little more soundly at night because they don’t have to worry about losing everything if they get sick.”

He also said the United States will have secured 600 million doses of vaccine by the end of May and announced that enrollment for Obamacare was being extended for another three months, giving people longer to take advantage of his healthcare subsidies.

He made the announcements as part of his “Help is Here” tour to publicize benefits introduced as part of his coronavirus recovery plan.

It “brings relief to a population that’s badly hurting,” he said, adding it was a priority to get $1,400 checks to individuals.

“By tomorrow, we will have a distributed 100 million of those checks, just since the legislation passed,” he said.

But the main focus was to illustrate to the public how his plan reduced health insurance premiums.

“If you’re enrolled in Obamacare, you’re going to save an average of $50 a month, $600 a year by the reduction in payments,” he said.

And he announced that a special enrollment window would be extended from May 15 to Aug. 15, giving patients extra time to take advantage of the tax credits.

“Every American deserves access to quality, affordable healthcare — especially as we fight back against the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra. “Through this special enrollment period, the Biden administration is giving the American people the chance they need to find an affordable healthcare plan that works for them.”
