Chris Matthews: Democrats should not ‘look down’ on anti-abortion people

MSNBC host Chris Matthews urged Democrats to not “look down” on anti-abortion and Trump voters Monday.

“They’ve been looked down on,” Matthews said about President Trump’s supporters. “Democrats have a lot of people out there that feel discarded by them.”

“It’s one thing to disagree about abortion rights. We all have our own personal views — and nuances by the way, lots of nuances in that fight. But don’t make fun of the other side, don’t make fun of the pro-life people. Don’t think they are low-brows because they aren’t as sophisticated as you are. I think there’s a lot of that attitude that creeps into the vote.”

Matthews said Trump won, in part, because he was able to capitalize on people feeling discarded by the Democratic Party.

His comments came the same day he plans on holding a town hall in Dayton, Ohio, to talk to people who voted for Trump in 2016.

Matthews said the town hall was an opportunity to hear from the working class, which are not always heard from. He said that both people who voted for the president and those who did not were “patriotic.”
