A group of divers in Mexico took the latest Internet craze known as the “Harlem Shake” dance underwater on Monday.
About a dozen divers gathered in the resort city of Cancun to perform their underwater version of the popular dance that has gone viral on the web.
Entertaining an audience of statues and fish, the divers shimmied about the sea floor, waving their hands while trying to float.
The “Harlem Shake” is an Internet phenomenon with thousands of social media postings by those who break out in the dance.
The dance is to the song of the same name, and countless videos have popped up where one person starts dancing, then the camera cuts to a large group of people dancing, many in costume.
Diver Jorge Tapia explained this was the first time people had performed the “Harlem Shake” underwater.
“We had 10 divers participating, we were amongst friends, and having a good time. People from all over the world came,” Tapia said.
The dance took place at the sub-aquatic museum at the National Marine Park in Cancun.
The underwater museum is famous for its 400 concrete life-size sculptures used to create artificial reefs.
Up to 4,000 videos of “Harlem Shake” variations are uploaded on the Internet daily.
