The Democratic debate in South Carolina descended into chaos as the candidates argued over math — and former candidate Andrew Yang wasn’t even on stage.
Sen. Bernie Sanders was asked Tuesday night by a presidential primary debate moderator to do the math on how he would pay for his Medicare for All plan.
“How many hours do you have?” Sanders quipped in response.
“It doesn’t take two hours to do the math,” Pete Buttigieg interjected.
“Let’s talk about math,” Sanders said.
“Let’s talk about math, indeed,” Buttigieg responded.
The two continued arguing about math, leading debate watchers on Twitter to invoke Yang, whose campaign merchandise said “MATH” for “Make America Think Harder.” The candidate, who ended his campaign earlier this month, also called himself “the Asian man who likes math.”

Every time a moderator or candidate says math during the debate, @AndrewYang burns a tie.

“The moderators are having trouble controlling this debate,” Yang himself weighed in on Twitter.
