Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called on Friday night for Donald Trump to apologize to women for vulgar comments he made about women in 2005.
“These comments are repugnant, and unacceptable in any circumstance. As the father of three daughters, I strongly believe that Trump needs to apologize directly to women and girls everywhere, and take full responsibility for the utter lack of respect for women shown in his comments on that tape,” McConnell said in a statement.
Trump put out a statement defending himself from the new report Friday, in which he expressed remorse for offending anybody.
“[Former President] Bill Clinton has said far worse to me on the golf course — not even close,” Trump said. “I apologize if anyone was offended.”
In May, McConnell promised to support Trump, but did not officially endorse the Republican nominee.
House Speaker Paul Ryan also expressed his dismay with Trump’s hot mic debacle Friday evening, canceling an appearance with the candidate in Wisconsin on Saturday.
