More of the California parents and children who were stranded in Afghanistan during the country’s Taliban takeover are safely out of the country, a school district official said Thursday.
“One family consisting of two adults, and five children returned back to the US yesterday afternoon,” Cajon Valley Union School District Family and Community Engagement media contact Howard Shen wrote in an internal email shared with the Washington Examiner. “Two additional families are confirmed safely out of Afghanistan.”
Approximately five Cajon Valley families — 14 children and eight parents — remain in the nation, Shen said. The news comes as 12 U.S. service members were killed Thursday, and 15 others were reportedly wounded.

“The district requests that the family who has safely been returned home to us be given peace and privacy to rest and recuperate from the long journey back to the US,” Shen said.
The district remains in collaboration with the office of Rep. Darrell Issa, a California Republican, Shen added.
