Florida has confirmed its first case of microcephaly in an infant born to a mother with the Zika virus.
The baby was born to a mother from Haiti who had traveled to Florida to deliver her baby. The Florida Health Department said it is working with the family to connect the child to services through its Early Steps program.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has so far reported that four other infants have been born in the U.S. with birth defects caused by the Zika virus. All of the mothers contracted the virus either while traveling abroad or from a partner who had traveled.
Florida is one of the top states in the country with Zika patients. The virus is known to cause microcephaly in infants, a condition causing an abnormally small head and developmental problems in the brain.
