Former South Korean President Park Geun-hye was seen leaving the presidential palace in a motorcade Sunday evening after the country’s Constitutional Court voted on Friday to remove her from office for her role in a large-scale corruption scandal.
Park departed the Blue House for her private residence in southern Seoul. Hundreds of supporters gathered outside her home before she was set to arrive and chanted, “Nullify impeachment!”
Movers unloaded a washing machine, bed, television and other items into Park’s new residence, according to multiple reports.
Park, the daughter of the once-South Korean dictator Park Chung-hee, was ousted from office on allegations of colluding with a personal friend to extort money and favors from companies. In return, she gave the confidante say in national affairs.
Park may face criminal charges, including bribery, extortion, and abuse of power for her alleged role in the scheme. She has not spoken since the Friday ruling.
Protesters poured into the streets of Seoul following Friday’s decision. Two people were killed as a result of violent clashes that took place near the court. Acting South Korean leader, Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn, has called for peace.
