P.G. police asking for tips on airwaves

Prince George’s County Police are encouraging listeners of area radio stations to break “the code of silence on the streets” and give tips to police as they work to stop more violence.

Since the beginning of 2011, 20 people have been slain in the county. Authorities have acknowledged that cultural attitudes against “snitching” have made getting crime tips from residents a challenge.

The Radio One stations participating in Tuesday’s “Stop the Violence Day” radio-thon include WKYS 93.9 FM, WYCB 1340 AM, WOL 1450 AM, WMMJ 102.3 FM and Praise 104.1 FM, according to a news release. Officers will give crime prevention tips on the air.

Authorities on Tuesday will also be on hand at Radio One, Inc., located at 5900 Princess Garden Parkway in Lanham, to receive tips in person and answer questions regarding police resources, police said.

“We want the community to engage in bringing violent criminals to justice by providing information that would reduce violent crime in Prince George’s County,” Police Chief Mark Magaw said.
