Ted Cruz’s Democratic challenger regrets acknowledging him as a ‘giant asshole’

Sen. Ted Cruz’s Democratic challenger, Rep. Beto O’Rourke, walking backed his prior approval of the characterization that the Republican incumbent was a “giant asshole” after it made national headlines.

During an appearance on “Real Time with Bill Maher” last month, O’Rourke laughed and agreed with Maher as he skewered Cruz’s likability and called him a “giant asshole.” Not dismissing the comment, the Democratic hopeful just laughed and added: “That’s true.”

However, O’Rourke now tells the New York Times he regrets that moment.

“I think I was just moving the conversation along,” he explained when asked about the Maher interview. “Anyhow, I don’t think that Ted Cruz is an asshole.”

When asked for confirmation if he thinks Cruz is a “giant asshole,” he said, “I certainly don’t think that publicly.”

Despite unusual popularity and strong fundraising numbers for a Democratic U.S. Senate candidate in Texas, O’Rourke still has an uphill battle to beat out Cruz in deep red state come November.
