Joe Biden won Arkansas by double digits on Super Tuesday, adding it to his wins in nearby Oklahoma and Tennessee.
Biden, 77, had 33% of the vote, or eight-plus delegates, compared to Bernie Sanders’s 21% and Michael Bloomberg’s 21% after polls closed at 8:30 p.m. EST, with 35% of precincts reporting.
There were 31 pledged delegates at stake in Arkansas. A total of 1,991 delegates are needed to win the Democratic nomination. While dwarfed by delegates on offer in California and Texas, the two-term vice president put a stop to Bloomberg, the billionaire former New York City mayor.
The information services entrepreneur and philanthropist invested heavily in the region, hoping he would have a competitive advantage over his cash-strapped rivals for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination.
While Biden had a good start to the night, California and Texas provide opportunities to pick up 50% of the 1,357 delegates available on Super Tuesday.
