Chris Murphy rules out 2020 presidential run

Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., won’t be a candidate for president in 2020, he said Wednesday.

The Democrat from Connecticut had been considered a possible contender in what is likely to be a crowded primary for his party.

“Let me be 100% clear,” Murphy tweeted. “I’m not running in 2020. I love the job I have now.”

Some of Murphy’s colleagues in the Senate have already entered the race or launched exploratory committees, including Sens. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and and Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y. Others are expected to make announcements in the coming months.

“At least 2 or 3 Democrats in the Senate need to stay behind to keep the fight going here!” Murphy said.

Murphy was elected to the Senate in 2012 and easily won re-election in the 2018 midterm elections. Murphy had previously represented Connecticut in the House from 2007 to 2013.
