Florida Gov. Rick Scott thinks the Republican party’s presidential candidates should talk more about economic policies and job creation if their goal is to take back the White House in 2017.
“We need to talk about jobs, then we need to talk about jobs, then we need to talk about jobs,” Scott told those gathered in Hollywood, Fla., on Thursday for the Republican National Committee’s spring meeting.
“We all love Ronald Reagan. We don’t care too much about Hillary Clinton. We’re pro-life and we’re anti-[the Islamic State]. What are we missing? What have we not talked enough about?” the two-term governor asked the audience, prompting a woman to shout “jobs.”
According to Scott, Republicans “can’t lose” in November if the eventual nominee is promoting capitalism as the optimum vehicle for economic growth and job creation. Especially in a general election race where the Democratic nominee will be championing “socialism,” he said.
“The job market, growing this economy is the most important thing on the average person’s mind,” Scott told the meeting’s attendees during a luncheon Thursday afternoon. “We have got to rebuild our military. We’ve got to destroy ISIS. How do you do that with a bad economy? We want to secure [our] borders? How do you do that without a good economy?”
He continued, “The Democrats don’t have answers. They are clueless. What’s their newest best idea? Socialism. We all grew up knowing that centralized planning has never worked, but their new idea is socialism.”
The Florida governor said Republicans can’t “even think we would lose if we talk about how we’re going to make sure everybody — doesn’t matter what zip code [they] come from — has the opportunity for a great job.”
“[If we] defend capitalism and let them go defend socialism, we can’t lose,” Scott stated matter-of-factly.
