LOS ANGELES (AP) — A look at the basic rules of voting in California:
TO BE ELIGIBLE TO REGISTER TO VOTE IN CALIFORNIA
You must be a U.S. citizen; a resident of the state; at least 18 years old as of the day of the election; not in prison or on parole for a felony conviction; not declared mentally incompetent by a court.
WHAT IS THE STATE LAW FOR MENTAL COMPETENCE AND VOTING?
The law reads, in part, that a person is “deemed mentally incompetent, and therefore disqualified from voting, if … the court finds that the person is not capable of completing an affidavit of voter registration.”
CAN YOU BE ASSISTED CASTING A BALLOT?
A voter has the right to receive assistance when casting a ballot.
HOW MANY LANGUAGES ARE USED BY LOS ANGELES COUNTY TO PRODUCE ELECTION MATERIALS?
Ten: English, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Hindi, Tagalog and Khmer.
HOW MANY REGISTERED VOTERS ARE IN CALIFORNIA?
As of May 19, California had 17.7 million registered voters.
