Anne Boone-Simanski: Don?t mess with Tex-Mex at La Tijuana Cantina

Because of PR guru Jeff Stintz, we took a tour of the new Tex-Mex venue ? La Tijuana Cantina at 1003 N. Charles St. in Mount Vernon.

Proprietor Don Davis filled us in on the scene and the details of this quaint cantina, all thanks to the creative wonders of designer Klaude Krannebitter.

Don?s chef Paul Castro presented samples of his authentic Tex-Mex cuisine that were beyond fantastic. Some items are actually straight from the heart of Texas and are flown in daily.

Lights, camera, action

Even with the heavy rains and gusty winds last Friday, there was no threat of a power outage at the Shattuck home.

Constellation Energy?s top bulb Mayo Shattuck and his wife, Molly, invited many local VIPs to their home to rub elbows with celebrity participants in this year?s Constellation Energy Golf Classic, which was held last week in Hunt Valley.

This high-voltage group included the state?s Superintendent of Schools Nancy Grasmick and her hubby, Lou, Republican candidate for state comptroller Anne McCarthy, who is the dean of the Merrick School of Business at the University of Baltimore, and power couple Kelly and Cal Ripken Jr.

BSO draws a charitable crowd

Something special took place at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall last Saturday evening.

Eight hundred and fifty people spent big bucks to eat, drink and be merry ? as well as enjoy a lovely performance by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

There also was a spirited live auction.

As usual, the folks at Classic Catering People, Eddie Dopkin and Terri Young, outdid themselves, as did Carole Langrall of A Garden of Earthy Delights with her beautiful floral arrangements.

Some top batons included Michael Bronfein, chairman of the symphony?s board of directors; David and Michel Modell, who served as the event?s chairs; Lainy Lebow-Sachs, the ticket chair; and Paul Meecham, the BSO?s new president, and his wife, Laura Leech.

Also in attendance were Sens. Paul Sarbanes and Barbara Mikulski, U.S. Reps. Dutch Ruppersberger and Ben Cardin, and the state?s first lady Kendel Ehrlich.

This wonderful event brought in more than a half million dollars to support the BSO.
