MoCo firefighters help with N.C. rescue efforts

Six local firefighters are helping with rescue efforts in Sanford, N.C., after tornados ripped through much of the South this weekend, causing dozens of deaths and injuries.

Five Montgomery County firefighters and one Howard County firefighter were in North Carolina for previously scheduled training when the storms hit, according to Montgomery County fire and rescue officials.

They received a call to mobilize for assistance as the storms moved through the state. The Maryland firefighters responded to a Lowe’s home improvement store near their training site and helped people trapped in debris.

The firefighters are expected to return home Sunday.
