State Dept. officials to clean up beaches on Friday

State Department officials will clean up beaches around the country on Friday, and will get help from foreign diplomats as they mark International Coastal Cleanup Day.

“Tomorrow, on Friday Sept. 9, the State Department will team up with foreign diplomats to clean beaches across the United States,” spokesman Mark Toner said.

“This is in recognition… of International Coastal Cleanup Day,” he said. “This initiative will support the goals of our Ocean 2016 conference, which is coming up next week.”

“In collaboration with the Ocean Conservancy and its local partners, State Department personnel from the office of foreign missions, together with … the foreign consular corps … will clean beaches in Chicago, and Galveston [Texas], and Kahuku [Hawaii], and Key Biscayne [Florida], in New York, and Santa Monica, as well as Seattle,” Toner said.

The department under Secretary John Kerry’s leadership has stressed the need to fight climate change and protect the oceans in many of the foreign visits he’s made over the last few years.
