After watching impeachment proceedings play out in the House, Sen. Ted Cruz said he finds himself underwhelmed and is looking forward to a Senate trial’s quick conclusion.
“This show trial from the House, that proceeding will be over, and we’ll leave it to the American people to decide who our leaders should be,“ the Texas Republican said Sunday on ABC’s This Week.

Cruz joined his Republican colleagues in the GOP-controlled Senate in alluding to a speedy impeachment trial in the Senate, which they predict will end with President Trump’s acquittal.
“There are 51 votes in Senate for a fair trial,” Cruz said. “What we saw in the House was one-sided … the Senate, I’m confident, is going to do much, much better.”
Democrats are impeaching Trump on the heels of an intelligence community whistleblower report who warned the president conditioned military aid to Ukraine on the country opening an investigation into alleged corrupt practices by one of Trump’s chief political rivals, former Vice President Joe Biden, who currently leads the pack of 2020 Democrats.
Trump faces two articles of impeachment: one for abusing his power and another for obstruction of Congress. The White House has not cooperated with the impeachment investigation, citing a “highly partisan and unconstitutional” process.
Cruz said Trump should be able to call his own witnesses during a Senate trial if he wants.
“We’re going to respect due process,” he said. “I think that means we allow both sides to present their case.”
