Schumer: Senate will not hit 60-vote threshold on Gorsuch

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Sunday predicted the Republican-controlled Senate will not have the 60 votes required to overturn a potential filibuster and confirm Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch by the end of the week.

“It looks like Gorsuch will not reach the 60-vote margin,” Schumer told NBC’s “Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd.

The New York Democrat did not mention the nuclear option, which would require Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell find only 51 senators to vote in favor of Gorsuch.

However, if a Democrat filibusters the vote, the GOP would need to come up with 60 votes for cloture in order to move the process to a vote.

Instead, Schumer skated past the nuclear option and said President Trump ought to “try to get a mainstream nominee.”

McConnell insisted earlier on Sunday that the Senate will confirm Gorsuch by Friday.
