Trump optimistic he and Ryan can unite on immigration

Donald Trump is optimistic he and House Speaker Paul Ryan will be able to unite the Republican Party despite differing positions on immigration policy, a key issue in the 2016 election.

“I mean, you know, you always have differences. No matter what you have, you’re going to have differences. If you agree on 70 percent, that’s always a lot,” Trump told Fox News host Greta Van Susteren on Wednesday when asked about their differences on the policy.

The presumptive GOP presidential nominee and Republican congressional leader have sparred over Trump’s plan to implement a temporary ban on Muslim refugees until the U.S. determines whether there is any connection between the religion and the Islamic State.

Ryan has said the U.S. cannot constitutionally refuse entry to a person based on his or her religion.

The New York businessman softened his tone, reiterating that he would institute a ban, but terminate that strategy once the threat was minimized.

Trump also discussed how he would go about developing details of that strategy, giving new details about the size of the immigration commission he plans to create.

“I think by putting five, six or seven people together that really — they have expertise in the field, I think that would be good,” Trump said.

Earlier Wednesday, Trump said he would appoint former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani to head the commission.
