Ghislaine Maxwell, who is facing charges for conspiring with the late Jeffrey Epstein to abuse underage children sexually, has a secret spouse who she refuses to name, prosecutors said at her bail hearing on Tuesday.
Prosecutors made the claim after accusing her of purposely trying to hide the extent of her wealth, reports the New York Post.
“In addition to failing to describe in any way the absence of proposed co-signers of a bond, the defendant also makes no mention whatsoever about the financial circumstances or assets of her spouse whose identity she declined to provide to Pretrial Services,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Alison Moe said to Manhattan federal Judge Alison Nathan via video link.
“There’s no information about who will be co-signing this bond or their assets, and no details whatsoever,” Moe added.
Maxwell, 58, was arrested earlier this month and was charged with conspiring with Epstein to recruit, groom, and sexually abuse underage girls as well as perjury in depositions related to Epstein.
Maxwell filed a bail request of $5 million on Friday in a court filing, adding that she “vigorously denies the charges,” but the judge denied her request after prosecutors argued she presents a flight risk if she was let out on bail.
A criminal trial against Maxwell is set to begin next July.
