“Duck Dynasty” patriarch Phil Robertson has offered to join Donald Trump’s presidential campaign as the presumptive Republican nominee’s “spiritual adviser.”
The 70-year-old reality TV star and evangelical Christian told Fox News Wednesday morning that he had to support Trump after his preferred candidate, Ted Cruz, suspended his campaign this month.
“I was forced onto the Trump train, but I am happily volunteering my services for Mr. Trump, mainly because the Republican Party has spoken,” Robertson said.
“I’ll make a valiant attempt behind the scenes … to sit down with Donald with a Bible in between us and I might help him along with concepts like loving your enemies, loving your God, loving your neighbor.”
“I maybe can help him in that area. I can see it now: Trump wins and the camera’s panning and his spiritual adviser is me. Is America ready for it?” Robertson quipped.
Despite acknowledging that he’s unfamiliar with Trump’s record on a number of issues, the TV star said he trusts the billionaire would be a better commander in chief than either Democratic presidential candidate.
“I know their record. With Donald, I’m not quite sure since he doesn’t have a record in the political arena,” he said. “However, I’m taking my chances not even knowing. I know the Clintons. I’m not sure about Trump. I’m with Trump.”
Robertson’s son, Willie, has publicly supported Trump since January, when he endorsed the New York businessman at a campaign stop in Las Vegas.
