VOICE-OVER SCRIPT:

THE VIOLENCE IS MUCH WORSE THAN OFFICIAL RECORDS SHOW …

IN THE CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC – PLAGUED BY YEARS OF SECTERIAN CLASHES BETWEEN MUSLIMS AND CHRISTIANS – NEW NUMBERS COMPILED BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SHOW AT LEAST 5186 PEOPLE WERE KILLED, IN JUST THIS YEAR SO FAR.

THE AP USED A COUNT OF BODIES AND NUMBERS GATHERED FROM SURVIVORS, PRIESTS, IMAMS AND AID WORKERS.

THAT’S MORE THAN DOUBLE THE DEATH TOLL OF AT LEAST 2,000 CITED BY THE UNITED NATIONS IN APRIL, WHEN IT APPROVED A PEACE-KEEPING MISSION _ AND THERE’S BEEN NO OFFICIAL COUNT SINCE.

SOUNDBITE: Joseph Bindoumi, president of Central African Human Rights League

“The magnitude of the people killed, massacred is so great that we need the international community to launch an on the ground enquiry.”

UNITED NATIONS PEACEKEEPERS WILL BE HEADING TO THE COUNTRY NEXT WEEK.

THE U.N. SAYS IT HAS TAKEN MONTHS TO PUT THE PEACE-KEEPING MISSION TOGETHER …

SOUNDBITE: Stephane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General

“Mobilizing troops for peacekeeping mission takes time because it’s not like they’re waiting in New York for us. We have to go knock on doors for troops, for equipment, helicopters.”

MANY DEATHS WERE NEVER OFFICIALLY COUNTED, ESPECIALLY IN THE VAST, REMOTE PARTS OF THE WEST.

EVEN THE AP TALLY IS ALMOST CERTAINLY A FRACTION OF THE TRUE NUMBER …

IN THE TOWN OF GUEN, SURIVORS SAY CHRISTIAN FIGHTERS STORMED A HOUSE IN FEBRUARY WHERE DOZENS OF MUSLIM MEN AND BOYS HAD SOUGHT REFUGE.

ONE OF THEM, ABACAR, SAYS HE LOST FOUR SONS IN THE ATTACK.

SOUNDBITE : Abacar, witness

“I saw a kid hitting them with a machete, he was shouting ‘Lie Down! Lie Down!’. Well, as they lay down, he turned his machete and and started to chop at their necks.”

UNREPENTANT, THE LOCAL LEADER OF A CHRISTIAN MILITIA CLAIMS THAT EVERYONE KILLED THAT DAY, INCLUDING CHILDREN, WERE MUSLIM REBELS.
