Delta plane flies into Irma, lands, and then returns to mainland

A Delta plane flew into San Juan right as Hurricane Irma, a Category 5 storm, barreled down on Puerto Rico, before dashing back into the air within an hour.

According to Jason Rabinowitz, a self-professed aviation enthusiast who was monitoring Delta flight 431, the aircraft continued to trek from New York City to San Juan. Other planes in the Caribbean had turned around to fly back to the mainland.

The plane landed in San Juan and moved the departure time up by 25 minutes. The plane took off after only 52 minutes on the ground, including taxiing after landing and before takeoff.

The aircraft then navigated through the outer bands of Hurricane Irma and proceeded to outpace the hurricane as it returned to the U.S.
