Law enforcement searching for missing Oklahoma 4-year-old

Oklahoma state authorities and local law enforcement are searching for a missing 4-year-old girl who was first reported missing Tuesday afternoon.

Athena Brownfield was reported missing around 2 p.m. Tuesday in Cyril, Oklahoma, after a postal carrier discovered her 5-year-old sister by herself. The carrier reported finding the unattended sister to the Cyril Police Department and learned that Athena was missing, according to authorities.

“This is a very active and ongoing investigation, and right now our top priority is locating her. And sorting out who’s responsible will come next. We need to find this little girl,” Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Brook Arbeitman told KOCO. “She’s on her own in the elements. So, is that endangered? Yeah. But is she the victim of physical harm? That’s yet to be determined.”

Brownfield has limited verbal skills, Arbeitman added. She can speak but is extremely shy. Initial reports claimed that Brownfield was 3 years old, but it was later confirmed that she is 4.

The FBI, Caddo County Sheriff’s Office, and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol are also assisting in the search. Hundreds of members of the public have helped in the search as well. Officials have asked people in town who have video cameras on their front doors to bring footage to the Family Life Church so law enforcement can look at the video.

“The whole town has been out. We’ve also used dog teams and infrared,” Lt. Michael Francis with the state bureau told KOCO.

Those interested in helping look for Brownfield are also encouraged to go to the church where officers are organizing the search.
