‘I’m getting shot!’: Louisville police officer shoots pepper bullets at news crew

A news crew appeared to by fired upon with pepper pellets as they covered a protest in Louisville, Kentucky.

During a live shot Friday evening, WAVE 3 News reporter Katilin Rust was moving toward a line of Louisville police when an officer in riot gear took aim at the camera.

An anchor on the air said, “OK, well, you keep going and go where you got to go, and that’s fine with us,” before Rust began screaming.

“I’m getting shot! I’m getting shot,” yelled Rust. “Kate, Katie, are you OK?” asked one anchor.

“Rubber bullets, rubber bullets, it’s OK, it’s those pepper bullets, it’s those pepper bullets,” replied Rust.

“Who are they aiming that at?” asked an anchor.

“At us!” responded Rust. “Directly at us, directly at us.”

A WAVE 3 News van was also vandalized, according to the outlet.

The incident occurred on the fourth night of nationwide protests following the death of George Floyd while in the custody of the Minneapolis Police Department.

Protesters turned out in downtown Louisville on Friday night to demand justice in the shooting death of Breonna Taylor. Taylor, a 26-year-old EMT worker, was shot and killed in March after officers forced their way inside her apartment while executing a search warrant in a narcotics investigation. No drugs were found in her home.

In another high-profile interaction between police and the press, CNN reporter Omar Jimenez and members of his camera crew were arrested by Minneapolis police Friday morning. They were released soon after.
