CODY, Wyo. (AP) — The Wyoming Game and Fish Department will undertake some high tech fish stocking later this week.
The agency, in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service, planned to use a helicopter to stock fish Monday and Tuesday in the Cloud Peak Wilderness of the Bighorn National Forest and in Dead Indian Creek on the Shoshone National Forest.
The helicopter is being used because vehicle travel is illegal and impractical for transporting fish to the remote waters where the stocking will occur.
State game officials say while helicopter stocking is expensive, it is less costly than backpacking or stocking fish with a pack string.
Many of Wyoming’s high country lakes are not capable of supporting a reproductive population of fish.
