Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton insisted yet again that there is “nothing” to hide in the transcripts of the speeches she gave to big banks on Wall Street but even if Donald Trump released his tax returns she would not release her speech transcripts.
“Let’s deal with the standard that’s been in place for decades before we move onto new standards and impose on me and nobody else,” Clinton told MSNBC during an interview between campaign stops in West Virginia on Tuesday. “Let’s get Donald Trump’s tax returns out and the transcripts of his speeches. Because as I am told he’s made a whole lot more money than I have.”
While voters, political pundits and her opponents in both the Republican and Democrats primaries have all pushed Clinton to release the transcripts of the speeches that earned her hundreds of thousand of dollars, the former secretary of states has refused to comply. Clinton still insists that she will only release her speech transcripts if Donald Trump does so as well.
When asked what was holding her back from showing the public the transcripts, Clinton defended herself and pointed to her campaign’s transparency, as she recently released thirty-three years of tax returns.
“Let’s deal with apples and apples. And I know Donald Trump hasn’t put out any of his,” Clinton said of Trump’s taxes.
Clinton went on to explain that she wanted to stay focused on the “issues” and that Trump has “given no indications that he understands the gravity of the responsibility that goes with being commander in chief.”
