Walter Mondale predicts Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar will go far in the 2020 Democratic primary contest.
The former vice president told the Star Tribune that he believes Klobuchar will “wear well” in the primary fight, but cautioned that with so many people competing it was too early to say for sure.
There are 24 people running for the Democratic nomination. Klobuchar ranks eighth, with 1.8% support, according to the latest RealClearPolitics average of polls.
Mondale, who also hails from Minnesota and remains active in the public service sphere at 91, said he will help Klobuchar’s 2020 campaign in any way he can.
“I’ve worked for a long time in trying to get more women in government, break up that stag party,” he said.
Mondale was Jimmy Carter’s vice president from 1977-1981, and also served as a U.S. senator and ambassador to Japan. He ran for president in 1984, but lost to Ronald Reagan in a landslide, carrying only Washington, D.C., and his home state of Minnesota.
