A dozen members of Turkish president’s security team to be charged over embassy brawl: Report

A dozen members of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s security team will be charged for attacking protesters outside the Turkish embassy in Washington, D.C., last month, according to the New York Times.

The Metropolitan Police Department along with the State Department and the Secret Service have been investigating the May 16 incident. The police plan to announce the charges at a news conference on Thursday morning, the Times reports.

Authorities have already announced charges against two Americans and two Canadians for their roles in the assault. Two Turkish nationals were arrested Wednesday for their involvement in the brawl.

Democrats and Republicans on Capitol Hill have called for the attackers to be prosecuted. Last week, the House unanimously passed a resolution condemning the attack and calling for charges against members of the Turkish security force.

The attack occurred while Erdogan was in town visiting President Trump.

A video published by the Times shows Erdogan watching the attack occur from his vehicle parked nearby. His role in the attack, if any, is unclear.

Many of the protestors were American citizens.
