Fourth Ride On bus goes up in flames

A Ride On bus caught fire Tuesday morning, the fourth such fire among similar Montgomery County buses in the past 17 months.

The latest fire occurred about 7:42 a.m. on Route 29 near Oak Leaf Drive in the White Oake area of Silver Spring, according to Montgomery County Fire Capt. Oscar Garcia. When firefighters arrived, the bus engine compartment was aflame, parked in the northbound lanes.

The bus had been out of service at the time, with only the driver aboard. Garcia said. No one was hurt. The fire was extinguished in about five minutes.

The three previous fires all struck Champion buses of the same model,  which look more like an airport shuttle than a long city bus. They have been the only ones in the Ride On system to have fires since September 2010.

Stay tuned for updates.
