Omaha’s new mayor will drive hybrid car

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha’s new mayor says she’s leasing a hybrid gas-powered engine for official city business.

Mayor-elect Jean Stothert says she’s paying for the lease on the 2013 Ford Fusion Energi herself and also will buy her own gas, even though she’s entitled to a taxpayer-funded vehicle.

Stothert says she’d also like to stop using a driver, but she’ll first discuss the matter with the police chief because of security concerns.

The mayor’s vehicle has been an issue in the past.

Mayor Jim Suttle, who lost last month’s election to Stothert, was criticized for leasing a sport utility vehicle with a high interest rate. The lease agreement was later changed.
