House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she did not care to comment on President Trump’s recent remarks signaling he wants to reopen the American economy in a matter of weeks amid the coronavirus pandemic.
“I don’t have time to follow people’s twits- tweets, Twitters, whatever, tweets, so, don’t expect me to comment on that,” Pelosi said Tuesday on CNN.
Host Dana Bash asked Pelosi what she thought of the possibility that Trump would loosen current social distancing restrictions from federal health officials to allow businesses to open back up sooner than initially expected.
“I don’t care. I don’t care. I don’t care!” Pelosi said. “My opinion is that it is not scientific-based. He’s notion-mongering as he does almost every day.”
Commenting on Trump’s plans for how to combat the virus and keep the American economy moving would be a “waste” of her time, Pelosi said.
“I would rather spend our time focusing on the fact that, any president or anybody with responsibility should be scientifically inclined, evidence-based, data. What is going to make the difference?” she said.
Trump said he hoped to have American workers, many of whom are going without paychecks as bars, restaurants, and other nonessential businesses are shuttered in states across the country, back on the job by Easter Sunday, April 12.
An economic relief deal between Senate Democrats and Republicans is expected to pass Tuesday.
