Texas toddler discharges gun, injuring mother and sibling

A gun went off in the hands of a toddler in a Walmart parking lot in Granbury, Texas, on Wednesday, injuring the child’s mother and younger sibling, according to local police.

Russell Grizzard, a lieutenant for the Granbury Police Department, said the 2-year-old had gotten into the car and picked up a gun hidden between a seat and the center console. The gun then discharged in the toddler’s hand, hitting the child’s mother in the arm and side and the 1-year-old sibling in the leg, he added.

The mother and younger child were taken to a hospital in Fort Worth, Texas, located 40 miles northeast of Granbury. Neither was severely wounded, officials said.

THREE-YEAR-OLD GIRL WHO ACCIDENTALLY SHOT HERSELF ON CHRISTMAS DIES FROM INJURIES

The children’s mother was standing outside the door on the driver’s side and the father was standing near the rear of the car, police told the Associated Press.

Police are still investigating the incident and have not determined whether charges will be filed, Grizzard said.

Other children have been mortally wounded by self-inflicted gunshot wounds in recent weeks. A 3-year-old died last week after accidentally shooting herself in Edneyville, North Carolina, on Christmas Day after a gun was left in the back of a truck by a guest of the family, the child’s father told 911 operators. The child had picked up the gun after playing in the front yard and accidentally shot herself in the head, according to local law enforcement.
