Donald Trump’s campaign manager confirmed on Friday that the presumed Republican nominee will announce his vice presidential pick this weekend, confirming a comment Donald Trump Jr. made Thursday night.
Paul Manafort told Fox News early Friday morning that just because Trump delayed his announcement, which was originally set for Friday, doesn’t mean he hasn’t made a firm decision.
“I think that Mr. Trump has reached a decision, but he hasn’t, he isn’t prepared to announce it yet,” Manafort said. He said Trump is planning on making an announcement “this weekend.”
According to Manafort, Trump was “moved by what happened” in Nice and was affected emotionally. Announcing his pick in the aftermath of the attack would have been “totally inappropriate,” Manafort said.
Reports surfaced Thursday that Trump has decided on Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as a running mate. Manafort didn’t confirm those reports, but said when asked again that Trump is not having second thoughts, and is only delaying his announcement “out of respect.”
“So people will certainly know by — you know, in a short time,” Manafort said. “We’ll be putting out an announcement this morning of what’s going to be the new process after the postponement of today. So I would think it’s going to happen before we go to Cleveland.”
Republicans are on their way to Cleveland for the Republican National Convention, which officially begins Monday.
