Marjorie Taylor Greene suspended from Twitter over COVID-19 misinformation

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene was suspended from Twitter for posting tweets that violated the platform’s coronavirus misinformation policies.

The Georgia Republican was blocked on Monday from generating new content for 12 hours, and Twitter slapped “misleading” warnings on some of her vaccination content. It’s unclear which tweet led to the temporary ban.

“We took enforcement action on the account @mtgreenee for violations of the Twitter Rules, specifically the Covid-19 misleading information policy,” a Twitter spokesperson told the New York Times.

FACEBOOK SAYS WHITE HOUSE ‘LOOKING FOR SCAPEGOATS’ AFTER MISSING VACCINE GOAL

Flagged tweets from Sunday and Monday had to do with COVID-19 vaccinations and wearing face coverings.

Greene, who apologized last month for comparing COVID-19 safety measures to the Holocaust, railed against Twitter and others.

“Twitter, Facebook, and the rest of the Silicon Valley Cartel are working hand in hand with the White House to censor Americans,” Greene said in a statement obtained by the Washington Examiner. “This is a Communist-style attack on free speech. These Big Tech companies are doing the bidding of the Biden regime to restrict our voices and prevent the spread of any message that isn’t state-approved.”

“I will not back down and I will continue to tell the truth to the American people,” she added.

This comes as President Joe Biden implored social media giants to do more to combat misinformation pertaining to the pandemic. The president stirred controversy last week when he said Facebook was “killing people” with its failure to take down problematic content.

Biden later softened his criticism of the tech corporation after Facebook released a scathing statement against his claims.

“The fact is that more than 2 billion people have viewed authoritative information about COVID-19 and vaccines on Facebook, which is more than any other place on the internet. More than 3.3 million Americans have also used our vaccine finder tool to find out where and how to get a vaccine,” a Facebook spokesperson reportedly said in a text message to NBC News. “The facts show that Facebook is helping save lives. Period.”

“In private exchanges, the Surgeon General has praised our work, including our efforts to inform people about COVID-19. They knew what they were doing. The White House is looking for scapegoats for missing their vaccine goals,” the official said.

Earlier in the week, the White House announced it would be “flagging problematic posts for Facebook.” During a Thursday press conference, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said White House senior staff were engaging with “social media platforms” to combat the spread of “misinformation specifically on the pandemic.”

“In terms of actions we are taking or that we’re working to take, I should say, from the federal government, we’ve increased disinformation research and tracking within the surgeon general’s office. We’re flagging problematic posts for Facebook that spread disinformation,” she said.
