In 2013, NBC newsreader Brian Williams re-told the fake story of how his helicopter was shot down in Iraq. The story, which he passionately retells to David Letterman, begins about the 3 minute mark, with many details that we now know do not reflect reality:
Williams admitted today that indeed his helicopter was not shot down in Iraq. (He was in the follow-on chopper.)
But he played the humble newscaster, telling the audience he isn’t really a war correspondent. “Oh, don’t think any differently of me,” Williams told Letterman, after the talk show host said he now had to treat the NBC anchor with more respect. “I was an accidental tourist covering a conflict, trying to get close to these fantastic volunteers we have in the war, who raise their hands to go fight two wars. We got hit, and I came away just with more respect for these men and women. We just got to make sure they get everything they deserve when they come home.”
“Yeah, absolutely,” Letterman said.
