Justice Department to provide ‘all resources necessary’ in congressional baseball shooting

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said the Department of Justice would “provide all resources necessary” to investigate Wednesday morning’s shooting at a congressional baseball practice outside Washington that wounded five, including Majority Whip Steve Scalise.

“This morning, members of Congress, senators, congressional staffers, and Capitol Police officers were targets of a senseless and cowardly attack during a practice for a bi-partisan, charity baseball game,” Rosenstein said in a statement.

The Justice Department will help provide “all resources necessary for a thorough investigation,” he added.

“I commend the heroic officers of the Capitol Police and the Alexandria Police Department. Their willingness to risk their lives to keep us safe is humbling and inspiring,” Rosenstein said.

Because the attack injured a federal officer, the FBI has taken over the investigation into the shooting attack.

The alleged shooter has been identified in the press as James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Ill. The 66-year-old, who had a criminal history, has since died of his wounds after officers fired back at him.
