A Washington, D.C., bartender received 13,000 text messages from Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump supporters after C-SPAN mistakenly posted her phone number online.
DCist reported this week that Tripp Diaz, who works at Eatbar and wasn’t watching the debate, started receiving a blizzard of text messages and phone calls following Monday’s nights first presidential debate.
Why? C-SPAN posted her phone number on TV during its post-debate coverage for viewers to call in and text their thoughts on who won the debate.
Diaz told DCist about 7,900 texts came in the hours following the debate before she went to sleep and she woke up to 4,500 more. She’s received about 400 calls as well.
Most of the responses were from Trump supporters, she said. Many of the texts and calls were littered with vitriol, including racist and sexist comments, she said.
“I was taken aback by a lot of comments,” Diaz said.
Diaz said she’s already made up her mind on voting for Clinton, though she thinks “we have to choose between the two at the bottom of the barrel right now.”
While many of the texts were simply about who each texter thought won the debate, some others were just people looking to talk. She said someone named Doug continued to text her after he realized she wasn’t C-SPAN just because he wanted to talk.
Diaz said she’s probably going to change her number.
C-SPAN did not comment for the DCist story.
