Inova to build new HealthPlex

Inova Health System plans to open a new medical facility by mid-2008, a project necessitated by rapid population growth in southern Fairfax County.

The new Lorton HealthPlex on Lorton Road would house a number of hospital functions, including 24-hour emergency services, said Inova spokesman Che Parker. The approximately 107,000-square-foot project is expected to cost about $50 million.

Existing facilities in the area are already dealing with an increasing number of emergency department visits, he said.

“We are seeing increased capacity at the Springfield HealthPlex, as well as increased capacity at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital,” Parker said.

The new HealthPlex would sit on a now-undeveloped 14.5-acre parcel in the Mount Vernon District. Population forecasts for the district show an influx of about 30,000 residents by 2010, the largest projected increase for any of the county’s nine districts. Residential projects planned or under way account for a large part of this boom, said Anne Cahill, the county’s chief demographer.
