Sen. Dianne Feinstein on Wednesday demanded that the Senate Judiciary Committee hold a hearing to assess President Trump’s decision to fire FBI Director James Comey, and said Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and acting FBI director Andrew McCabe should be called as witnesses.
The two should also have to testify to prove “what steps are being taken to ensure this action will have no impact on the work of the FBI on the ongoing investigation” into Trump’s alleged ties to Russia, she added.
She made that demand at a committee hearing in which she also said Trump needs to answer questions about the timing of his decision.
“If the reason for firing Comey was because of his handling of the Clinton investigation, why now?” the California Democrat said in her opening statement at the hearing.
“The decision to fire Comey raises questions about the appropriateness and timing of firing the person in charge of an investigation that could, I won’t say would, but could implicate the administration,” she added. “To have this happen and to happen now is beyond surprising.”
Feinstein said she plans on working with Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., on legislation he is reportedly finalizing that would create an independent counsel to investigate for the Trump-Russia probe.
“I want to renew my call to have a special prosecutor appointed,” she said.
