Clinton celebrates abortion ruling, says fight isn’t over

Hillary Clinton celebrated the Supreme Court’s 5-3 decision to overturn a Texas law requiring abortion clinics to have surgical facilities and doctors to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital.

“SCOTUS’s decision is a victory for women in Texas and across America. Safe abortion should be a right — not just on paper, but in reality,” Clinton tweeted Monday morning, just minutes after the court released the decision that will make abortions more accessible in the conservative state.

“This fight isn’t over: The next president has to protect women’s health,” Clinton added. “Women won’t be ‘punished’ for exercising their basic rights.”

While Texas argued that the provisions protected women’s safety, the Supreme Court ruled that the law was unconstitutional. On the campaign trail Clinton has been a vocal advocate for women’s healthcare and abortion access. In January the embattled women’s healthcare organization Planned Parenthood offered Clinton its first-ever presidential primary endorsement, and its president Cecille Richards has appeared with Clinton on the trail.

“Today’s decision is a reminder of how much is at stake in this election. We need a president who will defend women’s health and rights and appoint Supreme Court justices who recognize Roe v. Wade as settled law,” Clinton wrote in a subsequent statement. “We must continue to protect access to safe and legal abortion – not just on paper, but in reality.”
