ALBA, Mich. (AP) — A strong harvest has been reported by a top Michigan potato grower.

The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports ( http://bit.ly/ZZaMv1 ) that Kitchen Farms’ 1,240 active acres produced about 60 million pounds of potatoes this year. The potato operation is between Mancelona and Boyne Falls.

Seventy-year-old president Bill Kitchen started working on the family farm at age 17. His son, Don, is vice president. The business began 104 years ago as a small family farm, founded by Bill’s grandfather.

Kitchen Farms grows mostly russet, white and yellow potatoes. Staffing levels vary from an annual base of 15 employees to a seasonal high of 40 workers.

Bill Kitchen says the operation is the largest potato farm in Michigan that ships only fresh potatoes.
