Griner, 31, pleaded guilty to a drug charge after being arrested on Feb. 17 for allegedly transporting cannabis oil in her bag, which is illegal in Russia.
On Tuesday, the basketball star was back in court as her defense team argued her marijuana use was for medicinal purposes.

As she arrived, Griner held two photographs placed within a plastic sheet protector, telling ABC News the photos were of “my wife, my two best friends, my teammates.”
When asked how she was doing, Griner said she had no complaints.
“No, no complaints. Just waiting patiently,” Griner admitted.

The State Department has designated Griner, who has played basketball in Russia for years during the WNBA’s offseason, to be “wrongfully detained” by Russia, which means her case is handled specifically by the special presidential envoy for hostage affairs.
If convicted, Griner could face 10 years in prison.
