Prince Harry accuses brother of spreading ‘negative’ stories about him and Meghan

Prince Harry accused his brother, Prince William, of spreading negative stories to the press about him and his wife Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, in the latest bombshell from the couple’s documentary series.

Harry claimed William allowed his press office to spread negative stories about the royal couple, breaking a pact the brothers had made not to let the press offices trade negative stories in the media.

“William and I both saw what happened in our dad’s office, and we made an agreement that we would never let that happen to our office,” Harry said in the fourth episode of the series, Harry & Meghan, which dropped Thursday. “There’s leaking, but there’s also planting of stories. I would far rather be destroyed in the press than play along with this game, this business of trading. And to see my brother’s office go along with this thing we said we would never, ever do, it was heartbreaking.”

The younger royal also claimed that his brother’s press office had released a statement with Harry’s name on it without permission, denying a story that alleged Harry had left the royal family because his brother had bullied him out.

“I couldn’t believe it. No one had asked me permission to put my name to a statement like that,” Harry said.

Harry said the saddest part of leaving the royal life was the wedge it created between him and his brother, who had sided with the monarchy but added he understood part of the reason William chose the monarchy is that he’s next in line to the British throne and therefore firm in the idea that the monarchy needed to survive.

Rumors of a rift between William and Harry began swirling in 2016 after Harry began dating Meghan. But the feud strengthened in 2020 after the Sussexes stepped down from royal duties. The rift was also prominent after the couple’s explosive interview with Oprah in 2021, in which Meghan, who is half-black, claimed there was racism in the royal family when an unnamed family member worried about the color of her son’s skin. William, however, has denied that his family is racist.

The comments come in the second half of the couple’s six-part documentary series, which was released by Netflix on Thursday. The first three episodes were released last week and included allegations of “unconscious bias” in England’s most famous family.

The series has been met with calls from conservative British lawmakers to strip the royal couple of their titles and outcries from royal experts. One expert claimed that the late Princess Diana, William and Harry’s mother, would be “appalled” at Harry’s disloyalty to the monarchy.
