Donald Trump supporter Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., said Tuesday the presumptive Republican nominee has the money necessary to carry the campaign to victory in November.
“[H]e dispatched 16 formidable opponents, many of them spent 10 times or more than he spent on their campaigns. It goes to prove this idea of buying ads to do attacks on people doesn’t seem to be working like it used to. It is more important to have votes than money,” Sessions said on Fox News’ “Your World” program.
The claim comes one day after Trump’s Federal Election Commission filings were released. Trump started June with $1.3 million cash on hand, putting him more than $40 million behind his general election rival Hillary Clinton.
The businessman, who has largely self-funded his primary campaign, raised just over $3 million in May, including a $2.2 million loan to himself. The low numbers come as Trump’s national poll numbers have also tumbled, but he is still competitive with Clinton in the swing states.
“Trump has said he will put the money in that’s necessary himself if he has to. I hope people will contribute to that campaign. I think they will,” Sessions said.
Sessions, chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Immigration and the National Interest, endorsed Trump in February. His former communications director, Stephen Miller, was responsible for crafting Trump’s immigration plan and has since left Sessions to work as a senior adviser for the campaign.
