Chinese media promote Kremlin claims that Bucha massacre was faked

Chinese state media are promoting allegations that the Ukrainians staged the mass graves in Bucha, the latest in the Asian nation’s furtherance of Russian propaganda about the Ukrainian invasion,

A Wednesday editorial in the Chinese Communist Party-run Global Times promoted claims from the Kremlin that Bucha was faked and even blamed the United States for continuing to accelerate the conflict in Ukraine.

“It is regrettable that after the exposure of the ‘Bucha incident,’ the U.S., the initiator of the Ukraine crisis, has not shown any signs of urging peace and promoting talks,” the Global Times said. “But is ready to exacerbate the Russia-Ukraine tensions and create obstacles to the peace talks between the two sides, by increasing sanctions against Russia, providing more weapons to Ukraine, and continuously pressuring Russia in diplomacy and public opinion.”

The editorial claimed that Russia provided “empirical evidence” to the United Nations Security Council to prove the Ukrainians falsified the incident and that the aggrieved response from the West to the events in Bucha is motivated by a “profound double standard.” The piece then attempted to present the West as failing to seek peace.

The events in Bucha “once again reminded the international community that along with a serious pursuit of responsibility and investigation, fanning the flames and ‘passing the knife’ should be avoided,” the editorial concluded.

China has attempted to posture as a “peacemaker” in the Ukrainian conflict while promoting Russia’s attempts to justify the invasion, such as NATO expansion. It has repeatedly blamed the U.S. for the violence in Ukraine due to its decision to provide weapons to Ukraine and to sanction Russia.

The events in Bucha have drawn global condemnation. Ukrainian officials said on Sunday that they had found the bodies of 410 civilians buried in mass graves, stuffed in sewers, and scattered across the recently liberated towns outside Kyiv. The events have renewed calls for the White House to maximize its economic sanctions against Russia.

When Russian officials claimed that Ukrainian armed forces and Western media forged these events, online communities reviewed and debunked the Kremlin’s narrative.

“These are war crimes and will be recognized by the world as genocide,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said during a visit to Bucha. “It’s very difficult to talk when you see what they’ve done here.”
